What To Do To Help Your Roofing Contractors

March 19, 2020

Working with roofing experts can be hard without help. So how can you work with the best roofing contractors Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, West Branch, Tiffin, and Hills, Iowa has to offer without running into any complications? The simple tips below will help you know how to make our job at Steve’s Roofing a lot easier. We know that we wish our customers know about these tips before they hired us. And even if you go with somebody else instead, these tips are still crucial to understand.

Understand Allowances and Other Issues

One thing that we run into all the time when working with homeowners is allowances – instead, their lack of understanding of allowances. We understand how this factor would be confusing or hard for some people to understand. We’re not coming at you for not getting it because we know that not everybody has the same kind of training or experience that we have as roofing contractors.

That’s why we’re going to explain allowances here to you, right now, to give you an idea of how they affect your project. First of all, allowances are things that are not knowable but which are likely to occur. For example, we may need to put an allowance in our budget for some roofing materials because we may be uncertain as to how they impact your overall roofing experience for you.

Just as importantly, this factor may end up influencing the budget and the estimate before you get your roof. For example, we may run into a situation in which we need more of a material than we expected in our allowances. As a result, your price may go up. We understand that this is a confusing and upsetting situation. But it usually cannot be helped. Just know that we aren’t trying to screw you over or make more money than we deserve.

Please Talk to Your Contractors

People working with contractors often get into a position in which they don’t want to criticize the builders for one reason or another. We understand that – you know that the job is tough, and you think you might even be wrong with the issue that you thought you spotted. But we’re here to tell you that contractors are not flawless, and mistakes may occur. And they want you to respectfully point them out so that they can fix the errors.

For example, let’s say that you notice your roofing contractors made a mistake, but you want them to see it and fix it. That’s not a good idea – if the contractor has put up too much material or installed too many shingles, that’s because they thought that was the proper procedure or missed the error. As a result, you need to talk to them about what happened to ensure that it gets caught first.

And don’t come at the contractors screaming or calling them incompetent – they reserve the right to walk off the job and not perform another step. Any money that they’ve gotten on labor will be theirs, as they completed the job. And then you’ll be stuck with a roof that is half-finished. Excellent communication requires understanding that mistakes may happen and that contractors are willing to fix them.

Track Anything That Must Be Changed

Look. When you’re working with any kind of contractor, there are things that will change with your project. For example, you may end up wanting a slanted roof partway through a project after asking for a flat one. Or you may change your mind and ask for a different type of shingle after the roofing contractors were half done. Those changes are totally your call and will be made by your roofers.

However, you need to make sure that you put all of these changes in writing to ensure that the contractor can bid on them and give you an estimate as to how much they will cost. This bid must be approved by you and signed by both parties. Now, you have a document that gives everybody an insight into the changes you asked and how much that they are going to cost everyone.

We suggest this process because it helps to ensure that nothing unexpected pops up as they build. For example, you can’t suddenly say that you asked for a change that they didn’t provide because the contract shows what you did ask. Or, likewise, they cannot claim to know anything about the upgrades because you have them written down. This process protects both you and the builder and makes them very happy in ways that go beyond merely finishing up a building project.

Behave in a Way You’d Want to Be Treated

For some reason, people who hire contractors often believe that they can treat them however they want. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve dealt with angry customers screaming at us or demanding unreasonable things that we cannot do. This situation thankfully is the exception rather than the rule. That’s because we not only provide excellent work and treat our customers fairly but inspire them to behave as well.

For example, roofing contractors typically need time to build various safety equipment that makes their job easier. Give them that time to ensure that your job goes smoothly. They also need to take breaks in the summer because working on the roof can be a hot and exhausting experience. Don’t expect them to be superheroes who are invulnerable to heat: they’ll need a break, just like anybody.

Some of our customers go the extra route and bring us cold drinks on hot days, provide snacks for when we break, compliment our work if we deserve it, and take other steps to keep us safe. You don’t have to perform these steps for us to work on your house, and we never anticipate them. But when you do them, it makes us happier and more motivated and more likely to go above and beyond for you.
